I*XL has been one of the most well know Sheffield trade marks. The first company known for using the mark on knives was originally George Wolstenholme and Son. The company's name was shorted to George Wostenholm sometime just prior to 1820.

These knives were made by most companies world wide for sailors and were often government issue to navies.

Schrade I-X-L Wostenholm "Sheffield England" - All About Pocket Knives
On the main blade it says Schrade I-X-L Wostenholm (overthe ixl is 1878 I know it's not that old!). On the tang it says Sheffield England on the main blade bolster is 10316.
